What happens to a dream when it arrives at a destination that has no room for it?
The Tarmac and the Tide
They arrive with heavy bags and lighter hearts, Drawn by a light that never seems to dim, Chasing a map where the journey starts At the edge of a world, on a desperate whim. But the towers are tall and the gates are locked, And the "Grand Hotel" has no room for the soul, So they sleep where the cradle of concrete is rocked, In the gaps of a city that isn’t quite whole."From all over the world," the voices say, To live in the shadows of Hollywood’s glow, Buying their time at the end of the day, With nowhere to turn and nowhere to go.Yet look at the cracks where the wild grass grows, Between the exhaust and the neon perfume, There is a strength that the skyscraper knows— The quiet, persistent, unspoken bloom.
Ps While some of us look for home in the shadows of the city, others find it in the words whispered across the miles. Read the companion poem on distance and declaration here: The Long Distancece Poem.
