The hum of the jet engines filled the narrow cabin, making the space feel even smaller than it was. Jane sat across from her, his expression unreadable, still playing his games with the FBI's terms.

"What do you think?" he asked, tilting his head with that familiar, frustrating curiosity.

Lisbon felt the snap. It wasn't just about the contract or the job anymore. "I think you were gone away forever," she said, her voice trembling with the weight of the letters she’d written and the silence she’d received in return.

She looked at the window, the clouds blurring into a grey smear. "Sorry. I wasn't thinking."

"Lisbon, I was trying to—"

"You think you know what's good for me!" She turned back, the fire in her eyes grounding him instantly. "I have been with you for two years. Two years of holding things together while you were a ghost. Don't tell me what I need."
